A Day of Pure Ho Ho Ho

My kids know the meaning of Christmas. As my 5 year old son kindly reminded me "Mom, it's NOT about the presents, it's about Baby Jesus". I must be doing something right!

With that being said, they also marvel at the magic of Christmas and the spirit of giving, which is Santa Claus!

So - I wanted to share a few pictures of them with their favorite man in red.

Hope you all aren't too stressed out right now getting ready for the rather large, full of expectations holiday. For myself, I'd say my stress level is at a 6.5 (on a scale of 1-10). Previous years I've been about a 9 at this point - but this year I managed to get some shopping done early - which helped tremendously.

All I need now is a Silent Night and some hot coffee and Bailey's :)

Happy Birthdays and Back to School 2011

I cannot possibly fathom how it is that my kids are now 9 and 5 years old. Where in the heck, does the time GO?

I'm late posting pictures anyway, and thought I'd combine birthdays, back to school, and both kids. (Let's not discuss the fact that my own BIG birthday occurred this month as well - maybe.. more on that one later! I'm just happy to celebrate 29 from here on out!)

Here's the boy - cute as ever with his little cake at the Putt Putt golf course. We gave him a party with his little friends to play golf. It was a hit - Star Wars + Putt Putt.

My girl just turned 9 years old - so hard to believe! The angel on her cake, was mine. I have a collection of them (Josef Originals) from ages 1-18. Well... the #8 is missing in action. I'm suspecting she is partying it up in the attic somewhere with GI Joe, but that hasn't been confirmed.

Back to school for my sweet girl - 3rd grade this year.

And... Pre-K for the boy. He will be quick to point out to you that he is in the "older" Pre-K classroom, so as to distinguish from the "younger" children. Three days a week this year - and so far so good! Both boy and Mom are extremely happy.

And, we couldn't have just a normal photo session - nope - this is our "normal" - my little goof ball. the Ham. the comedian. Never a dull moment around here!

Sofar Sounds Dallas - An Evening of Awesome Music!

About a week and a half ago I had the opportunity to attend one of the most unique musical experiences I have ever had. As many of you know, I love music - and lately have especially enjoyed listening to and getting to know the stories behind many unsigned and/or up and coming artists.

Sofar Sounds or Songs from a Room is a movement which began in 2009. It brings music lovers together in an intimate setting, often a secret living room location. The artists are able to play to a group of people who are there truly to listen to and appreciate the music. Check out their website for more information. The Sofar Sounds movement has gone global with shows happening worldwide.

You can also log onto the Live Stream to view previous shows.

Rhubarb Custard Pie - or, my little oasis of Heaven

Since my love of rhubarb knows no bounds, I have to share this recipe which I found in the depths of my mother's 1960 recipe box, along with about 50 other recipes that involve rhubarb.

I love this recipe because #1 - it's really pretty simple to make (especially with the invention of the pre-made Pillsbury pie crusts) and #2 - the custard/rhubarb combination is heavenly. Rhubarb by itself is pretty sour, and generally you need to add a good amount of sugar. This recipe however, isn't too sicky sweet - it's perfection!

So, here is a picture of the recipe that I was facing. I'm going to pare it down for you and make it less complicated than what you see here.

Your list of ingredients:

1 Pillsbury Pie crust

3 large eggs

1 1/3 cup sugar

7 TB cornstarch

1/8 tsp salt

2 cups skim milk

1 tsp vanilla

1 1/4 lb rhubarb, diced

1/4 cp water

1/4 tsp cream of tartar

Here we go!
1. Prepare the pie crust according to the package directions. I used a metal pie pan, but any will do. Bake it at 350 for about 10-15 minutes until it's golden. Cool completely on a rack.

2. Now for the Custard (not hard!)
Separate the eggs (save the whites for the meringue at the end). Place the yolks into a saucepan. With a wire whisk, beat 1/2 cup of the sugar, 4 TB of the cornstarch, and the salt into the egg yolks until smooth. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until the mixture thickens and it comes to a boil - which will be about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. Pour on top of your cooled pie crust and set it aside.

3. Now on the the rhubarb filling:

In a 2 quart saucepan, heat the diced rhubarb and 1/4 cup of water over medium heat and bring to a boil. Cook for 5 minutes. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup of sugar and the remaining 3 TB of cornstarch. Stir into the rhubarb and heat again to boiling. Cook, stirring constantly until the rhubarb is just tender and the mixture is thick and clear. Pour over the custard which is sitting patiently on top of your pie crust. Now onto the meringue topping!

*We are taking a little pause here* I just had to show you all this container of Cream of Tartar. This is what I found in my mother's cupboard - I think it's got to be from the 1960's - does cream of tartar ever go bad??? Well - I used it! and I'm still alive - pie turned out wonderful - so, I'm guessing not. ha.

4. Now to make the meringue topping.

Heat your oven to 350 degrees. Add cream of tartar to your egg whites in a large bowl. Beat them on high until stiff peaks begin to form. Beat in the remaining 1/3 cup of sugar. Spoon the meringue over the filling and bake for 12-15 minutes until browned.

Grab a hot cup of coffee, a huge slice of your pie and ENJOY! (Did I tell you I just LOVE pie?!)

Ready for a Road Trip? Retro Style!

I love road trips - especially the kind that involve rockin' music, (might I suggest a little Sam Bradley anyone?) good friends and the anticipation of discovery!

So - I decided to expand the retro goodness beyond your standard steering wheel cover (because everyone already has one of those, right? (no? well then....).

In honor of my sister's birthday a few weeks ago (yep, I like to extend the birthday celebrations and send gifts after the actual celebratory day - you know, just to spread out the love (maybe a smidgen b/c I'm a scattered brained mom too, but don't tell her! Second thought - she'd totally understand. She's running her own amazing photography business & chasing 3 little ones around too - so, I digress....) back to the goods!)

Here you have Whoopsie Daisies luggage tags and handle cover! Because you never want your luggage to look like everyone else's! (Just ignore the fact that if you're lugging around this huge, heavy vintage suitcase, no one in the airport is going to have one like it anyway - makes for a cute picture tho, huh?)

In all seriousness though - I do love these. I'm always wrapping bright ribbon around the handles of my boring black suitcase when we fly, so that I can easily spot my bag coming down the luggage ramp. I'll be making a ton more of these for sure!

Here is a little make-up bag I made for my sis too - I'm especially loving the gray/yellow combination here!

Then, because you want your car decked out in retro style - we have the rearview mirror cozy....

and.... the Steering Wheel cover. (don't worry, if you're brother in law is not so inclined to drive the mini van around with a floral steering wheel cover - like someone I know!) - it slips off quite easily and stuffs into the glove compartment.

Plain and Fancy Antiques

My parent's have an antique shop in Northwest Indiana called Plain and Fancy Antiques. (I'd give you the "link", but there isn't one. I'm still training them on reading/answering their e-mail!) However, they have been in business for over 25 years - so they do know their stuff!

I took some pictures of some of my favorite items in the shop this summer - hope you enjoy!

I'm loving these old coolers - according to Mom, they work better than the new ones - go figure.

This little painted trash can has a lever to open it with your foot - how cute?!

What a great cabinet, huh?? It's huge!

The color of this table and cabinet is such a wonderful mustard yellow - makes me think fall, and canning....... (please FALL! Come to TEXAS! This heat is making me crazy!!)

Rhubarb Recipes: Rhubarb Bread

Since Rhubarb is a bit rare where I live in Texas, I thought I'd share with you a few recipes that I tried while visiting my family in Indiana.

This one for Rhubarb Bread is extremely simple!

The rhubarb I used, came straight from my mom's garden - if you're using fresh like this, you'll want to be sure to cut the leaves off and discard them (they are poisonous). Then, you need to wash the stems and remove the ends before you start in with your recipe.

I found this recipe in my mom's stash - as you can see, it's been used and loved!

So, here we go:

Rhubarb Bread

2 1/2 cups flour

1 tsp soda

1 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups brown sugar

1 egg

2/3 cup oil

1/2 tsp vanilla

1 cup buttermilk (I use powdered buttermilk & just keep it stored in the fridge. You can also mix a TB of vinegar to a cup of milk if you're in a pinch)

2 cups diced rhubarb (I'd suggest using 3 cups)

Topping:
Sugar/Cinnamon

1. Stir together the dry ingredients.

2. Beat liquid ingredients.

3. Make well in dry ingredients, pour in liquid and stir until just blended.

4. Stir in rhubarb.

5. Pour into two 8x4 inch pans.

6. Top with sugar and cinnamon.

7. Bake at 325 degrees for 60 minutes.

Eat, and Enjoy! (I'd suggest a cup of steaming coffee as an accompaniment!) It's very much like a coffee cake -

Scenes from Indiana

These aren't the best quality photos, but they were all taken using my phone during our visit to Indiana the last several weeks. I thought they gave a good snippet of what our time spent there was like.

The kids got to meet "Honey" - the newest addition to the household at my parent's place...... we all fell in love with her. She is a rescue animal - which makes the story so much better. My parents had been looking for a pony for the grandkids, and while standing in a checkout line at the local nursery, my mother was overheard mentioning that she was looking for a pony. The lady behind her happened to work for the local Humane Society and mentioned that they had just acquired a pony that needed a new home. We are all just so pleased with her - she a little sweetheart. Wish I could have put her in my pocket and brought her back to Texas!

This is the front of the Log Cabin at the LaPorte County Pioneer Land. We spent A LOT of time here during Fair Week. That's my son in the front (all blurry) playing a game of washers. Both of my parents, (and this year myself included) volunteer their time to support this project. My kids absolutely love hanging out on the front porch, playing with all of the wooden toys and playing the part of "pioneer kids"

New Logos

I've sort of just stumbled along with my graphics/banners/business cards since starting my business in 2005. However, I could have never created anything like this on my own - totally worth the money!

Must run... breakfast dishes still on the table and they are asking for a snack. Floors need vacuumed and playdates to schedule. Refereeing and dishes to wash. Sewing - AH! - always, sewing to do.... never enough time to do it.

That's it for now - can't believe it's been a month since my last post. Summer is upon us and with that comes Theatre Camp, Soccer Camp, Vacation Bible School, Swim Lessons, and Tennis Camp - all in the month of June. Maybe I've over scheduled - but let me tell you - it's not a piece of cake keeping two kiddies entertained (or contained) during 103 degree Texas heat. I'm about ready to take a spoon from the kitchen and dig myself a swimming pool out back but the hubs is against that idea for some reason?

Next month it's off to Indiana to visit grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, a new pony and the county fair which is always a huge hit with my kids.

French Lavender Sachets

Like many of you, I can't stand throwing away any "usable" (pretty loose, negotiable term in my sewing room!) piece of fabric. Particularly those that are most vintage-y and retro-y. I can't remember why, but for some reason, I decided to go on a hunt for dried lavender so that I could make sachets from my little teensie tiny pieces. I also decided to quilt pieces together using 3x3" squares - I like the looks of them quilted, but also - I can use up pieces of fabric that are 3x3"! (pretty small) - you would think that I could then throw away those bits that are smaller, right? Hmmm.... well - we'll see. (that's what I say to my kids when what I really mean is "No").
I wound up purchasing from an Etsy seller - PopKo - and I love this stuff! I've made several sets of sachets and plan to list them in my Whoopsie Daisies shop as well as give them as gifts. I've also realized that they are great in the dryer, leaving clothes with a soft lavender scent (not the chemically scents from regular dryer sheets).

So, now my radar is on anything "lavender" scented. My Yoga instructor uses the most calming combination of lavender and mint oil that I'd love to have in my nostrils all day long. Still looking for a good lavender candle, but haven't found one yet.

Stamped Vintage Spoons Teacher's Gifts

I'm so excited - in my procrastination I think I've actually come up with a cute, original year end Teacher's Gift.
I had purchased these spoons back in December at an antique mall, thinking that I would attempt to stamp sayings, or names on them for Christmas gifts, but soon realized that my time had run out. And - I was chicken to start whacking on these pretty little spoons.
For some reason I got the courage today to just jump in and try it. I think they turned out pretty good, for my first ever attempt. The key, I discovered, is to really whack them hard! and... to do it with a towel on the drive way instead of the wooden workbench (which is way to soft).
So -
here we have the finished product: A gift card to the local ice cream parlor, 2 ice cream dishes, a thing of sprinkles and one silver plate spoon with the words "Ice Cream". Ta Da!

Can't wait to get back to the thrift store and snag some more cheap (this time!) metal silverware in order to make garden herb markers. It's fun to WHACK stuff!

I realize that the "Infiniti Sedan" doesn't make for the best photo, but it's not like I have a lot of cars at my disposal for picture taking.

Still Here......

Hi Everybody! Still here...... just seriously hit a "blog block". Feeling very little motivation to blog lately.
I'm hoping to upload some pictures of projects I've been working on - one in particular that I would love hear your opinions (I'm in the gypsy-hippie mood!)

Here's my life in a nutshell:
1. Running kids to school
2. Running kids to ball practice
3. Running kids to ball games
4. Running into the grocery store to feed hungry ball playing kids
5. Cleaning up dog poo and spew. Nasty Yuck. (carpet cleaner is on the way!)
6. Doing Laundry from ball playing kids
7. Seeing the hubs every now and then: He is working at a new job (a blessing for sure - just a lot of adjustments)
8. Planning summer camps for kids
9. Squeezing in a trip to the gym every now and then (Love me some Yoga! Need to be on the Treadmill tho)
10. Dreading the HOT summer......
11. Spending ample amounts of time on Twitter. Do you TWEET? Yes? Then come find me! "RetroLeeTX" It's fun!
12. Little bits of sewing... (some new stuff coming - Not just Toothfairy pillows, what can I say? I got bored!)
13. Reading "The Dukan Diet" and realizing that I cannot eat that much meat. barf. Also realizing that I eat WAY too much sugar/carbs.
14. and.... squeezing in a little bit of "me" time while enjoying some of my favorite musicians! Some new and some familiar. (Bobby Long, Sam Bradley, Lee MacDougall, Tom Bertram, Marcus Foster on the horizon)
15. Oh! Almost forgot! The hubs and I took our first ever BALLROOM DANCE LESSON! We learned a total of 3 Fox Trot steps - it was hilarious. Except the part where I back stepped into another woman and just about put my heel thru the top of her foot - oops. I'm so sorry!

Whoopsie Daisies is going in the direction of all Personalized Tooth Fairy Pillows. I'm in love with all of the bird themed items popping up all over this spring - so thought I'd add my own items to the mix.

Thought you might like to see the dress I picked out after the fiasco in my last blog entry. (I'm on the right in the red dress) Gah!

We had a great night, spent with great friends, all for a great cause too. Despite the whipping it was to find a dress, etc, etc, etc, - I'm so glad we attended.

Wish I had a picture of the hubs and myself, but my good friend in red here is prettier anyway :)

A Reality Check

This post will contain absolutely no pictures. No pictures what so ever. I have a picture, but you will never, ever see it. However, it is burned into my mushy brain forever and ever.

My 4 year old son recently gave me a little reality check in only the way a 4 year old can do.

So, here's the scoop:
The hubs and I are set to attend a "gala" in a few days. This is something that I both loath and look forward to.

#1 it's a night out away from the kiddies in an adult environment,
#2 I don't have to cook dinner,
#3 we stay the night in a hotel so.... staying up late and sleeping in are on the agenda,
#4 I don't have to fix breakfast,
#5 I don't have to clean up from dinner and breakfast,
#6 o yeah - and lots of fun with the hubs and our friends!

I loath the idea of a gala, specifically this one, because I've been encouraged to wear something that is not black! Argh! Black is all I own! I really, really, detest the idea of squeezing my body into a formal dress that is not black. Let's face it, we all look slimmer in black, right? I also waited a bit too long to shop for the dress so as to allow ample time for alterations, matching shoes, jewelry, spanx, etc, etc. Now if I had a personal shopper or wardrobe consultant, this wouldn't seem like such an overwhelming task. But... that's not gonna happen.

So, about a week ago, I started dragging my boy around the mall with me, looking for the "perfect" circus dress. (Did I mention the theme is "CIRCUS"? what?) I'm thinking I could have gotten away with my sequined leotard and matching tutu but the hubs put the brakes on that one.

So... as I said, me & the boy, shopping for circus dresses. I have to be amply armed with all sorts of entertainment for the little guy while in dressing rooms, such as candy, candy, little cars, candy, promise of pizza for lunch, candy, promise of play time at the mall cooty-infested booger smeared playground, candy, and.... playing games on my iPhone. Lots of you are moms, so you get the idea.

My boy loves to play with my iPhone, so I let him while I'm writhing around trying to contort my body into all sorts of creative ways so that I can fit the right body parts into the right holes and straps of whatever dress I'm attempting to squeeze into.
I'm sure it's pretty funny to watch (but I assure you I wasn't in a laughing mood after about the 20th dress) I also made a habit of taking a little picture in the mirror of any dress that was a remote possibility so I could get a "yeh", or "neh", from the peanut gallery (hubs & daughter). The boy caught on to the picture taking activity right away and asked if he could take the picture - so, in an attempt to entertain him, I allowed it -

So....., skip forward a few days....... I was sitting quietly waiting on my kids while they were in an art class here in town. Just hangin' with the other parents and messing around with my phone -you know, checking e-mail, checking Facebook, checking Twitter, playing a round of Words with Friends, looking at pictures, etc, etc.

And - WOAH! What the H-E-L-L is that picture I see on my phone??? It's a half naked picture of some woman with a body that looks like it's indulged in waaaaaayyyyyyy to many Dove chocolates, never felt the pain of a sit up, and seriously needs some support for the melons on top! Upon closer inspection, I realize that it's ME!

O my God - yes, my son took a topless picture of me while I had a dress over my head, trying to pry myself out of a garment that was way too tight with no zipper! You've been there, I know - when you put something on, then can't figure out how to get OUT of it? You kinda start sweating a little because you think you might have to have a sales clerk come and cut you out of it? I swear to you that I had no idea he had taken the picture.

I still can't believe it - it was seriously sooooo stinking funny, and soooo embarrassing at the same time! Talk about a reality check! Through the mouths of babes, no - through the eyes of babes come the truth!

I am so glad I'm the one who found the picture! What if someone else had found it??? It is safely deleted, but forever burned into my corneas. New incentive to get back to the gym, get back outside, get back on the yoga mat. I'm just glad my little boy doesn't know the difference!

Best Valentine Butter Cookies - EVER! Seriously!

I'm nibbling on one of these delectable little nuggets as I type this (well, the crumbs are falling onto the keyboard - I'll just send the dog in to lick it up in a sec ;)

If you like butter (and who in their sane mind doesn't??) - you'll salivate at these! I'm serrrr-eeeee-aaassss!

I thought on first glance they were just another sugar cookie, but oh no - more like a shortbread cookie. I've made 3 batches of these bad boys. Planned to make just 2, but then I tasted one, and it was all over from there.

They call for lemon zest, which I didn't have - so I substituted lemon extract. The lemon gives just the right amount of zing to them - you'll die!

So, I also decided that my kids weren't going to school on Monday with store bought little paper valentines from the drug store (which I'm beginning to think they would have preferred!) - so we (which means "me" actually! kids only remotely supervised this project, which doesn't really make it "their" project, now does it? dummy me - they could have written their names on the paper ones and been just as happy, but oh, no! "Crafty Mom" decided that they needed something a little "different!" o well.) made these little fortune cookie valentines from felt circles. They have cute little sayings in them like:

"I'm so fortune-ate to have you as a friend"

and "Hugs, Kisses, and Best Wishes"

and "Give me all your candy or I"ll kick you in the knees" (oops! not that one, really.)

I found it a little hard to keep the candies inside, so I ended up hot glueing the edges shut in a few places.

All in all, I think they turned out pretty darn cute!

Little Cabin in the Woods

What's that song?? It's driving me crazy! "Little Cabin in Woods, Little Man by the window stood, ..... something, something...." Anyone? Anyone?

Well, since my hubs is starting a new job - tomorrow! - (yikes, excited, scared?, mostly excited!), and we may not see much of him once he gets going, at least in the near future - we decided to take the kiddies down south of Fredricksburg, Texas to stay in a little cabin (in the woods,... yes.) for a few days. No cell phone service, no TV. Lost Maples Cabins.

We hiked a few miles at the Lost Maples State Park on Saturday, ate a bunch (seemed like all potato products to me - it's german country after all!). Yummy Bed & Breakfast food too - smores too...., watched deer, squirrels, etc - and even fairy shrimp in little puddles at the top of Enchanted Rock. Hubs and I were sore from all the hiking - kids, not so much. no big surprise there, huh?

Kids bickered and whined allllll the way down (5 hours) and alllllll the way back (yep, 5 hours). But - they insisted on sleeping together on the "Crouton" (as my 4 year old boy says) - (Futon bed) - and, they played together wonderfully once we were out of the car. Silly kids.

Just another Saturday here in my household. Went to the gym this morning and actually stepped out of my comfort zone and tried a Zumba class. I wanted to laugh my arse off! From the looks of the other participants, I was thinking it was going to be a Sweatin' to the Oldies class. But, let me tell ya I was put in my place. That shiz was a bit difficult. Well, my arthritic feet didn't help the matter. Plus with all those mirrors around the room, it was plain to see that I was not the coolest person there! Reality check #1 for the day.

So, I've got plans to get into my sewing room this afternoon. I found this cute little Samonsite suitcase at the thrift store the other day for (don't hate me!) $1.25!!! Seriously! It was half price day, unbeknownst to me, and I snagged the suitcase and several vintage-y linens too for a total of $4! Woop!
Ok, well, back to sewing... I'm taking Whoopsie Daisies a new direction this year. The plan is to make all tooth fairy pillows. I'm going to offer personalization on them too - so..... hence the picture.......
Did I mention that I have a HUGE half price sale going on??? I think I did. But, just to let you know once again... head over, please! and help me clean out my mess of a sewing room!

So, I'm sharing this picture to the left just to give you a smidgen of a peek at the chaos of my house. Unfortunately, when the kiddies are playing well together, it usually means that they are destroying some area of the house.

Why am I so concerned over a mess? Seems so natural, here at my home anyway. "Mess" just lives here, always has. Well..... my hubs has taken a new job. Which we are extremely excited about, but which will mean us moving further into west Texas. About 1 1/2 hr. from where we live now - west - towards the metropolis of ..........NOTHING! Moving from a small town (which is near Fort Worth - so think Target, Starbucks, a decent mall, restaurants, etc, etc.) to....an extremely small town which will be about 40 minutes from the luxuries I've grown accustomed to. It'll take some getting used to - but I think it'll be a really good move for us.
So.... back to "Mess". Well, "Mess" is going to have to get his happy ass out of my house. Because it's got to be sold before too much longer. I'm staying put with the kiddies until the end of the school year - but this summer, we will be moving.
(Not sure about Whoopsie Daisies - thinking every little bit of fabric and thread will need to be packed up and put in storage for awhile - boo hoo!) But, I'm hopeful that a move will mean an actual sewing room! Joy of Joys!
I'm sure I'll have lots more to say about all of this.......

The True Story of Rudolph

A man named Bob May, depressed and brokenhearted, stared out his drafty apartment window into the chilling December night.

His 4-year-old daughter Barbara sat on his lap quietly sobbing. Bob's wife, Evelyn, was dying of cancer Little Barbara couldn't understand why her mommy could never come home. Barbara looked up into her dad's eyes and asked, "Why isn't Mommy just like everybody else's Mommy?" Bob's jaw tightened and his eyes welled with tears. Her question brought waves of grief, but also of anger. It had been the story of Bob's life. Life always had to be different for Bob.

Small when he was a kid, Bob was often bullied by other boys. He was too little at the time to compete in sports. He was often called names he'd rather not remember. From childhood, Bob was different and never seemed to fit in. Bob did complete college, married his loving wife and was grateful to get his job as a copywriter at Montgomery Ward during the Great Depression. Then he was blessed with his little girl. But it was all short-lived. Evelyn's bout with cancer stripped them of all their savings and now Bob and his daughter were forced to live in a two-room apartment in the Chicago slums. Evelyn died just days before Christmas in 1938.

Bob struggled to give hope to his child, for whom he couldn't even afford to buy a Christmas gift. But if he couldn't buy a gift, he was determined to make one - a storybook! Bob had created an animal character in his own mind and told the animal's story to little Barbara to give her comfort and hope. Again and again Bob told the story, embellishing it more with each telling. Who was the character? What was the story all about? The story Bob May created was his own autobiography in fable form. The character he created was a misfit outcast like he was. The name of the character? A little reindeer named Rudolph, with a big shiny nose. Rudolph had a very special girlfriend named "Clarice", whom he loved very much. Bob finished the book just in time to give it to his little girl on Christmas Day. But the story doesn't end there.

The general manager of Montgomery Ward caught wind of the little storybook and offered Bob May a nominal fee to purchase the rights to print the book. Wards went on to print,_ Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer_ and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores. By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph. That same year, a major publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book.

In an unprecedented gesture of kindness, the CEO of Wards returned all rights back to Bob May. The book became a best seller. Many toy and marketing deals followed and Bob May, now remarried with a growing family, became wealthy from the story he created to comfort his grieving daughter. But the story doesn't end there either.

Bob's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, made a song adaptation to Rudolph. Though the song was turned down by such popular vocalists as Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore , it was recorded by the singing cowboy, Gene Autry. "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was released in 1949 and became a phenomenal success, selling more records than any other Christmas song, with the exception of "White Christmas."

The gift of love that Bob May created for his daughter so long ago kept on returning back to bless him again and again. And Bob May learned the lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different isn't so bad. In fact, being different can be a blessing.

Broken refrigerator, Broken garage door, Broken dish network receiver, Broken truck, Broken gate (actually 2 broken gates), on the verge of being broken hot water heater, a rattling something in my car window that is most likely broken, and the list is growing..........

Truck repaired - check.
Refrigerator repaired - check.
Garage Door repaired - check.
Dish Receiver on it's way, hopefully check. In the meantime, we are w/o television for 4 days. Yes, probably a good thing, but you try it with 2 kids and let me know how that goes :)
Still have to make some phone calls on the gates...
Rattling car window will have to wait (although it's making it hard for me to hear Sam Bradley while driving :)

When did they quit making things that last?

Broken hearted little girl. Missing her grandmother. This will take longer to repair. We are all feeling broken over this, especially with Thanksgiving/Christmas.

Broken portable DVD player. Suffered a little boy's cowboy boot to the screen. Road trip to Mississippi in the near future. May result in broken parents' nerves.

Thankful for what is not broken right now.

Sam Bradley in Dallas - Zuni

I think most of you know, I am a huge fan of live music - specifically guitar, acoustic - folksy, rock, soul, alternative, country-ish (no top 20 stuff please), indie - singer/songwriters.....

I had the opportunity to see one of my top favorites - Sam Bradley Friday night in Dallas at the House of Blues! Sam played with guitarist, John Notto - these guys put on a great show; although I was a little bummed because I am height challenged, and this is one of those venues where you need to be at least 6 feet tall in order to see the stage. My friend and I got sandwiched in the middle of the crowd, and we both started getting claustrophobic, so we crawled out and wound up on the side of the room - right behind a speaker - ah, but oh well - such is life. Sam opened for Brooke Fraser - I would have preferred to see Sam perform the whole show - but.....still.... ah well, what could I do. Except ask the guy in front of me if I could sit on his shoulders, but.....that wasssna gonna happen - errmmmm. He is such a talented musician/singer and a gentleman to boot - he obliged me with a photo - along with each and every one of his fans.

I'm not a music critic by any stretch, but I know what I like - and I love Sam's music - check out his new EP, titled Zuni - you can find more info here. You can also visit his MySpace page and have a listen to several of his songs -

I'm so happy to have been able to see him perform again! It's great to see people in their element and following their dreams - it's very inspirational - it's all good - wishing him the best of luck!

Birthday Gift in 1 Hour - whew! Just in time.

We came home this afternoon from 2 ball games and I had 90 minutes until my daughter needed to be at a birthday party. Being a procrastinator, I didn't have a gift ready - figured I'd just go shopping at Whoopsie Daisies if I had too. But I wasn't sure an 8 year old would appreciate a pumpkin? hmmmm. ....maybe? no? OK. (it's a joke). I was thinking that I just might have enough time to sew something up real quick while the rest of the family was taking a nap..... (did I mention that I have no voice today and a cough that sounds like a seal? It's not pretty.) Anyhooooo..... back to sewing...

Here's what I managed to put together in 1 Hour (and 10 minutes.... I'm honest at least)

This the felt flower pin/ponytail holder, which I just pinned to a pre-made headband that I found at Joann's one day in the dollar bin. I bought 5 of them, thinking they would be perfect for my little flower pins. I have to say, the felt is much, much easier to work with than regular cotton fabric - I used in as the liner on the inside of the Scribble pad too, much easier.

Then, this is the Scribble Kit - well, minus the hand embroidered "Scribble" - (I was only working with 90 minutes, remember!) - So, instead it has a big felt "E" which is the first initial of the little gift recipient.

Then, I just used a paint pen to write her name and a Happy Birthday message on the bag, tied it with some fabric strips, and Voila!

So, then,.... the Halloween Candy was sitting right there, and thinking I deserved a reward - I grabbed a Twizzler and sat on the couch for 10 minutes before we bolted out the door again.......

Are You Thinking Thanksgiving Yet?

Thanksgiving is exactly 1 month away - I can't believe it. I'm stressed already, just thinking about it. Because once Thanksgiving hits - you know what, is right around the corner - and I NEVER have enough time to plan, execute, then actually sit back and just enjoy the season.
I guess I like fall so much because we get 3 months of it - I count September, October, and November. I don't feel so rushed. Even though in Texas, September is still blazing hot - so it's a bit of a stretch. But, at least I know cooler temperatures are around the corner. (Supposed to get up to 90 today!!! What????! - Ugh - and here I was thinking I needed a Pumpkin Spice Latte (go here to see my hil-ar-eeee-ass friend "Charles") today - boo!!)
Oh well -

I've been playing around in my fall fabrics, getting ready for another awesome Trunk Show - October Shop & See at my dear friend Jenn's (from Hippie Bliss) house in Fort Worth, on Thursday night, the 28th.
I just can't let that 1970s fabric go! I love it! (See, barely a mention when I first found it hiding out in a thrift store in Indiana, but it's one of my favorites, ever!) I've saved every little bitty scrap, thinking I may be able to use it in some project later.... I know it's not for everyone, maybe it's the 1970's born child that I am that makes it feel so familiar to me. I'm betting that my mother had me dressed in a jumpsuit for elementary school in a fabric similar to this one!
How about you? Do fabrics take you back to a time in your life? Or a person perhaps?
So, anywhooo..... whipped up this garland/banner/bunting thingy to hang over the fireplace. These suckers are verra difficult to photograph, I might add!

Pretty Vintage Pillowcase Turns Cafe Apron - A Free Tutorial - Super Easy!

Since this is one of my most popular blog posts ever, I am re-posting it! It was originally posted back in June of 2008.

Some of you have asked about easy instructions for a beginner apron. So, here you go!

This one is made from two vintage pillowcases. They are so much fun to use because of the unique embroidery work you find on each one.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'd love to hear from you if you plan to make one, or have one completed.

Materials Needed:
1 Vintage Pillowcase
2 6"x19" pieces of fabric for pockets
2 2 1/2"x about 40" pieces of fabric for ties (can use upper portion of pillowcase)Vintage Trim - Rick Rack or Ribbon
White Thread
Sewing Machine and/or Serger
Straight Pins
Iron
Rotary Cutter and Mat
Transparent Ruler
Scissors

Instructions:
1. Press your pillowcase using your iron and spray starch.
2. Determine the length for your apron. (Mine is 21") Add 2 1/2" for the waistband. Using a rotary cutter and transparent ruler, cut across your pillowcase.
3. Determine the width of your apron. (Mine is about 33" wide) Flip your pillowcase over, and cut a slit down the middle. Lay it out flat on your cutting mat and cut to the desired width being careful to center the motif.
4. Hem the sides by serging; zig zagging; or turning under 1/4", press, turning under another 1/4", press, then stitch in place close to the folded edge.
5. At the top of your apron, turn down 2 1/2" towards the back for the waistband and press.

6. Open back out and turn under 1/4" along the raw edge. Press back down.
7. Using rotary cutter and ruler, cut 2 strips of fabric for the apron ties 2"x about 40" (twice the width of your pillowcase works great!).
8. Press under 1/4" on the 2 long sides and 1 short side of each apron tie. Press under another 1/4" on the 2 long sides.

9. To avoid bulky tips on the apron ties, fold the material back out and trim the corners. Fold the short end to make a pointed tip and press. Stitch around the apron ties close to the folded edge.

10. Insert ties into the sides of waistband. Pin in place. Stitch all the way around close to the folded edge.

The basics are done - now it's time to embellish!

11. Cut 2 pieces of fabric 6"x19" for pockets. Fold with right sides together and press. Stitch around with 1/4" seam allowance - Be sure to leave about 2" opening (to turn right side out).

12. Trim the corners and turn right side out. Press well. Stitch opening closed.

13. Pin pockets in place. Stitch around 3 sides close to edge.
14. To create smaller pocket sections, stitch down the center of each pocket.
15. Add desired trim along the bottom using a straight stitch.

Congratulations! You're done!

Pumpkin Scotchies - The Cookie Recipe

Well, after mixed reviews at my house (was I going for a crunchy cookie - and these are more like Pumpkin Bread Cookies - a softer consistency), I decided to take these to the Fort Worth Arts Goggle Saturday night as my contribution to the snack table. (Pumpkin Spice Cookies also came along....maybe I'll post that recipe too a little later).
These little Pumpkin Scotchies were snatched up pretty quickly, with audible "Mmmmm's..... and Oooh's....) - so, here is the recipe:

Pumpkin Oatmeal Scotchies

(From Mommys Kitchen - a great blog for everyday cooking)

1 1/4 cp all purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 cp butter, softened

3/4 cp. sugar

3/4 cp. brown sugar (I used dark brown sugar)

2 large eggs

1 cp canned pumpkin (I used a small can)

1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (I used Mexican vanilla - yumm!)

3 cps quick oats

1 package Butterscotch chips

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon in small bowl. Beat butter, sugars, eggs, pumpkin and vanilla in large mixer bowl. Gradually beat in the flour mixture. Stir in oats and butterscotch chips. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake 7-8 minutes for chewy cookies or 9-10 minutes for crisp cookies (I baked for 12 minutes and still got chewy cookies). Cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes - then remove to wire rack to cool completely. (Personally - I inhaled my fair share while still warm! - yumm!)

White Pumpkins?

So - what's your style of fall decoration? Do you go for all Halloween? Then, dive into Thanksgiving - or do you just do the Fall/Autumn thing? Are you a traditional orange pumpkin sort of person? Or step outside the box a bit with the different colors and shapes? White perhaps?
All of a sudden, after seeing these ADORABLE little white pumpkin soaps from LilAnnieBell - I've been inspired to make my own white pumpkins.
So here's what I came up with....

I'm off to tackle my bin of fall decorations sitting in the garage right now - thinking it's time to dispose of our "Scarecrow Sally" - she's a bit worse for the wear this year. I'll have to do it discreetly because if the little kiddies see her sitting in the trash can, they may revolt and decide a rescue attempt!

Organizing a Week

At the urging of my family, I am making an attempt to organize my day to day task list. I'm assuming the glazed look in my eye lately, along with the sort of ADD, non-focused, scatteredness of my house cleaning & organizing has tipped them off to urge me towards making a change.

This is not an easy thing for me - I like a clean house, that's for sure, the problem is - that I spend a good portion of my day picking up, therefore avoiding other things that need to get done. You know the type - I find it extremely distracting to do anything else when toys, clothes, papers, and snack crumbs are scattered from one end of the house to the other - so.....I pick them up. And, then that's all I do - I pick up. period.

So - here's the plan. I know it's sketchy - it's a work in progress for sure. But - I am going to attempt to take one or two tasks per day and forget it the rest of the week. For example - yesterday (Sunday) was supposed to be my "Meal Planning/Grocery Shopping" day. Well.... the hubs was hunting over the weekend and I had to visit my ultra least fav grocery store (Yes, you know the one - starts with a "W". Let's not go any further, it makes my heart palpitate just thinking about it and I've had too much caffeine and dt. coke today already (Yes, I know. I need to cut that out too.))- on a Sunday afternoon, with two munchkins in tow. Actually, the kiddies were really well behaved, and I didn't even have to bribe them with candy - wow! Oh - but I did get Chicken Express on the way home, so guess they weren't subjected to my cooking last night. That's a bribe, if I ever heard one! ha. ha.

So, back to the plan -
Sunday - Plan Meals for the week/Grocery store
Monday - Change Sheets (no - I haven't done that yet today!), Whoopsie Daisies
Tuesday - Laundry/Vacuum house
Wednesday - Pay Bills/Organize Desk - and, Yes - PICK UP the house (the only day of the week here folks - rest of the week, it's up to the other, un-named members of my family. The dog's name is Hank - so there, you go!), Whoopsie Daisies
Thursday - Clean House/Vacuum
Friday - Iron Clothes
Saturday - not sure yet

I'm still filling in things like meals, the gym (yoga anyone?), kids' activities, volunteer work, church, etc, etc. I've already had to do two loads of laundry too - once when the doggie dear had an accident on the carpet, and then again when my son decided to play hurricane in the bath tub = wet towels, everywhere. Oh yeah - then we had fire ants in the house yesterday. So I sprayed them, then had to wash towels, rugs to kill those little devils.

It's not perfect, but it's a start. I have to say at day 5 the laundry is a huge mess, house is a bit messy for my taste - but....I did manage to spend more time with the kids this past weekend and we cleaned up my daughter's room and the playroom (in anticipation of 7 little 8 year old girls coming over Saturday for a slumber party - more on that later :)

So - how do you organize your week? Any special tips? Do you plan your meals? Do you shop one time/week? Do you just wing it? I'd love any tips!

Indie Craft Show

All in all, I had a successful day Saturday at the Cowtown Indie Bazaar. These pictures were taken the night before, and now I'm wishing that I had taken a few on Saturday because you could have seen some of the other vendors in the background. Here is a link to the Flickr pictures if you care to take a look at what other vendors were selling. I have to say, it was a very talented group of people. It was really nice to be at a show where everything was 100% Handmade, and 100% Indie.

Straight from the chaotic sewing room of Whoopsie Daisies, come the retro-hippy vintage-y funkilious pumpkins. Can you Dig It Man?

Remember the ugly-dugly fabric I snagged in Indiana? Perfect for fall pumpkins! (It was dated 1974 by the way). At least in my opinion that is. I realize that this fabric is not for everyone. Personally, I love it, but my house, though I'd love it to be, just isn't retro-cool. Cookie cutter suburban house doesn't equal retro-chic. I'll probably keep one or two in the hopes of finding someplace to display them though.
I went out yesterday after Coffee-Talk with some Fort Worth Etsy folks, and hit a local thrift store in hopes of find more previously loved threads to sew with, but no luck. Sometimes you hit the jackpot, and most of the time....Well....you don't. But the hunt continues.......

Scribble, Sketch, and Draw on the Go!

We attended a total of 5 parties last weekend, 3 of which were child's birthday parties. One was for a sweet little Four year old boy - which as you might guess, is more difficult for me to sew a gift for - and two of the other parties were for 3 little girls. (One party was a Wedding Reception - so that doesn't count, oh and one was a fun end of summer ice cream party) - keeping up with the math here? One party was for (four? no... "for") Two girls - one that was Seven, and one that turned Four.
And, I wonder why my brain feels like scrambled eggs sometimes.
OK - so basically, I had 3 little girls that I needed gifts for (not "four"), one little boy, and two parties that don't count in the gifts equation. I'll stop that now.
And - I had these tablets of paper and colored pencils - so, I whipped up these little Vintagey-Travel Pencil Art Pouch/Cases thingys. (Still working on the name, here).
Actually - these were the 3 extra that I made, because, did I mention that I'll be at the Cowtown Indie Bazaar on September, 4th? (Which is also going to be my 39 birthday - ugh! Can't believe I admitted to that. Really, it really will be "39". Trust me, if it's not 39, then I would've told you "29"! I'm still coming to terms with the whole 30's going into 40's issue. I know age is just a number, I know, I know - but jeez, .......feels like I just graduated from kindergarten. Not really, but you know what I mean - more on that topic later, I'm sure!)
So, anywhoo - basically, I'm sewing LIKE CRAZY! and, I'm still worried about not having enough products to fill my 10x10 booth - but it won't be for lack of trying!
I've got some cutesy Retro Cool Hot Pads to show you all, several funky vintagey- aprons, fabric flower pins, hippie fun retro button headbands, oooooh.....all sorts of things!

Rotten Tomatoes

This tomato pin cushion has lasted me through many years - probably a good 15 years of sewing, but I'm thrilled to see it go. I think it was the green leaves at the top that finally did it in - see the shavings popping out?

So, I'm happy to say I have a nice, new, pretty tomato to hold my pins. I even decided to pitch all of those dress shirt pins that I had saved and opt for keeping my trusty long yellow headed pins. Looks so much tidier, huh?

Speaking of rotten tomatos, one of the things I crave in the summer is fresh tomatoes from the garden. If you don't already know, I live in Central Texas and we are on day 20 of 100 degrees or more - ugh!

Each summer I've tried to plant a garden, and this year, mine got in a bit late so, my poor tomato plants are baking in the sun each day.

I thought this garden was an improvement to years past in a way because normally I've planted WAY too many plants and ended up with a giant gnarled mess of a garden this time of year. But - what was labeled as "Cucumber" at the garden center was actually a jalepeno plant, my "Zuchinni" was enormous bumpy Squash, and "Squash" died a pitiful death by some rooting animal early in the summer. So....I would really, really like just one or two pretty tomatoes to eat on my turkey sandwich!!! But, as you can see they aren't looking so hot. I may try for a fall tomato, which apparently one of our local garden centers is advertising.

This is what they look like now - barely hanging on - but I'm hopeful still for a few sweet fruits of my labor. (I'm curling my toes even taking these pictures, because I'm sceered (that's "scared" in "Texas lingo") to death of a creeping nasty snake biting my freshly pedicured toes! Blah!)

It's hard to tell in this photo - but there is a dirty rotten catepillar just making himself at home on one of my juicy delights - I'd pinch his little head off and squeeze it between my fingers if it wouldn't totally gross me out!!! Dang catepillar.

4 Years Old is Such a BiG BoY!

My little boy turned 4 years old the end of July - I'm a bit late posting pictures, but didn't want to let the occasion be missed. He decided that he wanted a Buzz Lightyear cake, and me being Miss Crafty, figured I could do this - no problem. Well - that cake was the hardest one I've ever tackled! Ugh - my boy didn't care though. He was just concerned that Buzz had two red buttons on his arms to shoot the bad guys - that was taken care of luckily.
He had a party with 20 of his little friends - not at my house (I'm not that crazy) - and then had fun with just family afterwards, opening up presents and eating more cake and ice cream.
All in all - a good day - a happy boy - a much loved boy, and one that isn't letting anyone forget that he is FOUR!

Vintage Dots for Boys

Boy baby gifts are always more difficult for me to create when working with vintage fabric. But - I think this works out quite well. I am in lurve with the blue polka dots in this fabric! It's vintage for sure - as well as the cutesy button and yellowish/gold rick rack. All show signs of previous love - but work perfectly together here.

A nice stack of 3 burp clothes backed in a vintage chenille bedspread straight from Grandma's boudoir ! Poor Grannie.....she's shiverin'

A diaper/wipes pouch perfect for, well....diapers and wipes. Or....a book, or a waller/keys, or lipstick and breath mints, or........umm....."insert your own here" - you get the idea!

This little ensemble is headed to Indiana for a baby shower this weekend :)

My Little Country Bumpkins

My sister made the pictures.....I made the kids - with a little help from their daddy (oh - and I made the boy's shorts too:).
